Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
This movie is a unique type of thriller horror film that is gripping and creepy, especially thanks to Hugh Grant’s performance. He plays the character of Mr. Reed, an odd and somewhat sinister man who invites two young Mormon missionaries into his house. At first, it seems like just a religious discussion, but slowly things get darker and more suspenseful.
Hugh Grant’s acting style, with his calm and slightly rude tone, makes Mr. Reed seem even creepier without needing any exaggerated horror tricks. The two missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton also delivered strong performances. Barnes is more seasoned and skeptical, while Paxton is eager and a true believer. Both actresses bring depth to their roles, which makes the story more thrilling.
With a minimal set and sound design, they create a claustrophobic feel that makes you feel like you’re trapped in that creepy place along with the characters. The sound effects and camera shots build suspense and give the film a smart, mature tone. The first half is engaging and unique, the second half shifts into more typical horror tropes, which can feel a bit predictable.
This movie kept me engaged throughout and it feels more like a psychological mystery than a typical horror film. If you enjoy intense dialogue and character-driven stories, it’s worth a watch just don’t expect typical jump scares.
